Genus Micrasterias

Description:
Cells single, usually 1-1.5x longer than wide, often flat and disc-like. Deep median constriction. Semicells clearly divided into apical and lateral lobes, separated by deep incisions. Cell walls punctate, in some taxa with marginal spines. A single plate-like chloroplast per semicell, with numerous pyrenoids visible.

Generally prefers acidic and oligotrophic conditions, with some taxa ocurring in circumneutral waters. Benthic.
