Genus Staurastrum

Description:


Cells single. In top view generally trigonal or tri-radiate (or more than triradiate). Hollow processes with terminal spines. Pronounced isthmus separates semicells. Another large, heterogeneous genus in need of revision/splitting.

Most taxa are plankters in oligotrophic lakes, sometimes in great abundance.
