Images

Use this page to access photographs of the valves measured. The pictures are arranged firstly by deme number then by decreasing length. The diatoms are numbered according to their picture file names; these numbers correspond to those in Column 1 of the morphometric data sheet.

Four images are available of each diatom:

• a stria focus (used for measuring stria density),
• an outline focus (used for measuring dimensions and rectangularity and for calculating the legendre coefficients and contour segment analysis data),
• a 'bar' focus (focused on the terminal bars, the angle of which is taxonomically important), and
• a single pixel outline (calculated automatically from the outline focus pictures, minimally touched up as necessary).

All photographs were taken with a Zeiss Axiophot microscope using a x100 oil objective (NA=1.4) with a 1.6x magnification changer. Each pixel represents a length of 0.05635 µm.

Decide first which deme you want to look at:

• Sellaphora blackfordensis, formerly the 'rectangular' deme
• Sellaphora capitata, formerly the 'capitate' deme
• Sellaphora auldreekie, formerly the 'small' deme
• Sellaphora lanceolata, formerly the 'lanceolate' deme
• Sellaphora pupula, formerly the 'neate' deme
• Sellaphora obesa, formerly the 'obese' deme
